Life's Shake.

Hello, I'm

Yash Gupta

Backend Engineer

I like taking messy production systems — analytics pipelines, metadata services, storage platforms — and making them cheaper, faster, and calmer under load. 7+ years across HPE, Sling, Bloomreach, Kong, and now Apple.

About me

Building calm systems

Hi, I'm Yash Gupta, a backend engineer in Bengaluru. I grew up curious about how systems hold together — Linux boxes, storage arrays, then the APIs and pipelines that sit on top.

Most of my work has been the unglamorous kind that actually moves the needle: migrating Python 2 estates, cutting cloud spend by more than a million a year, redesigning playback and image services so they take 5× the traffic on the same boxes.

Away from the keyboard I follow equities, tinker with new tools, and keep notes so the next problem is a little less surprising. The field doesn't end, and that's the point.

    • • Investigated and optimized analytics pipelines and jobs, saving about $1.1M per year.
    • • Part of the analytics team processing on the order of 7 million events at peak.
    • • Led Events Management: pixel-quality analysis dropped from ~1 day to under 10 seconds; designed the Events Management API and real-time ingestion path.
    • • Independently led the Python 3 migration (plus arm64, Ubuntu 22.04, Airflow 1.3 → 2.4) in under 4 months, ~$20k/year savings and a cleaner security story.
    • • Mentored junior engineers while shipping features on daily/hourly pipelines.

    Software Engineer II

    Apr 2021 — May 2022

    • • Co-led the Player Metadata Service redesign: QVT support, 5× RPS on similar resources, API latency under 200ms (~50% faster playback start).
    • • Led Image Service redesign: real-time resize, compression, gradients, and overlays in under 2 months, also at 5× RPS.
    • • Key contributor moving metadata from TiVo to Gracenote.

    • • POCs for production web-service designs: Go/FastAPI, gRPC, Kafka, OpenStack TaskFlow, APScheduler.
    • • Copy-data management revamp in under 7 days: restart time −80%, new storage-system add ~30s → ~5s.
    • • Led Python 2.7 → 3.6 migration for the whole codebase in under 3.5 months.
    • • Six recognition rewards during the HPE tenure.
